Stephen Carl is a studio-trained photographer
and teacher with a full time darkroom in Dayton, Ohio.
I am a long time teacher with the Kettering Adult School
with a degree in photography from Union College.
The techniques I use come from classic
West Coast photography with contemporary European overtones.
Some of these methods date back to the 1800’s
while others are very modern.
“I work with traditional methods,
i.e. film and an old fashioned wet darkroom to produce
my work.
I do not print the negative right
away. I allow time for the image to percolate in the
back of my mind, then experimenting in the darkroom
opens up brand new possibilities.
My work evolves from what I call the ‘spiritual
geometry’ of space, a sort of photographic feng
shui or visual meditation. It has been said, ‘everyplace
is magical if you are there at the right time.’ I
believe that everyplace is magical all the time if
only we have the eyes to see it.
I work in Black and White, which is
both literal and symbolic, to create a doorway, an
opening if you will, to the many layers of individual
awareness.”
